Onyx Shaker – Un-Assembled Cabinets

Onyx Shaker cabinets by Highland Cabinetry combine a black finish with framed Shaker styling and an unassembled format. The collection includes wall, base, vanity, and tall cabinets plus panels, fillers, trim, molding, hoods, and accessories for kitchens, bathrooms, bars, laundry rooms, offices, and built-in storage. Its deep color can create a clear architectural outline, but successful rooms balance that visual weight with light, contrast, and practical circulation.

Plan Onyx Shaker around Light and Contrast

Black cabinetry absorbs and reflects light differently as the finish, room, and viewing angle change. Test a current door sample with the actual countertop, backsplash, flooring, wall paint, hardware, fixtures, and appliances. View the group upright in daylight and under the bulbs planned for the room. A sample that looks crisp near a window may appear softer or heavier on a wall with limited task lighting.

The recessed profile of Onyx Shaker gives a dark finish useful shadow lines without adding ornate detail. Pale stone can create strong separation, mid-tone wood can warm the palette, and dark counters can produce a nearly monochromatic result. If the room uses several black finishes, compare sheen and undertone directly; appliances, metal fixtures, paint, and cabinetry may not read as one identical black.

7 Best Design Tips for Onyx Shaker

1. Layer three kinds of light. Combine ambient, task, and accent sources. Under-cabinet lighting protects work surfaces from heavy shadows and keeps the door profile legible.
2. Choose the contrast level deliberately. White or cream counters create a graphic edge, warmer stone softens the transition, and dark surfaces make a more immersive statement.
3. Add wood with a clear role. Flooring, shelves, seating, or a butcher-block feature can introduce warmth. Compare undertones so the wood does not appear orange or gray beside the black.
4. Use metal to define the mood. Brass and bronze add warmth, nickel provides a quieter highlight, and black hardware creates a lower-contrast look. Test actual samples before drilling.
5. Control reflective surfaces. Glossy tile can bounce light into a dark run, but several reflective materials may show glare. Compare finish sheen in the room.
6. Balance tall black elements. Pantries, oven cabinets, and refrigerator panels form large visual blocks. Distribute them across the elevation rather than concentrating all weight on one end.
7. Plan cleaning access. Fingerprints and cooking residue can become visible at certain angles. Choose functional hardware and leave enough room to wipe corners, appliance sides, and toe-kick transitions.

Build a Measured Cabinet Schedule

Record wall lengths, ceiling height, doors, windows, casing, plumbing, electrical points, vents, and appliance dimensions. Measure walls at several heights because rooms are rarely perfectly level or square. Create a floor plan and an elevation for each cabinet run, then assign a cabinet code, width, height, depth, orientation, and quantity to every location.

The listed Onyx Shaker assortment includes standard and specialty wall cabinets, diagonal and open-end options, glass and microwave cabinets, base configurations, drawer and waste solutions, sink and farm-sink bases, vanities, tall pantries, oven pieces, panels, refrigerator surrounds, fillers, hoods, roll-out trays, decorative pieces, molding profiles, touch-up products, and other accessories. Availability and included parts can differ. Reconcile the final cart with the approved plan line by line.

Check Clearances and Sightlines

Confirm door swings, drawer travel, appliance handles, corner access, crown height, countertop overhangs, and walkway widths. Use current appliance documents rather than nominal dimensions. Mark island backs, cabinet ends, toe kicks, refrigerator sides, and transitions visible from adjoining rooms. These locations may need a matching panel, filler, molding, or decorative door to continue the Onyx Shaker finish.

For broader kitchen and bath planning education, consult the National Kitchen & Bath Association or a qualified local designer. Professional review is especially useful for unusual corners, utility changes, structural work, accessibility needs, or compact layouts where dark finishes and tall elements affect the room’s balance.

Review the Listed Construction Features

The current Onyx Shaker family description identifies a painted three-piece Shaker door and drawer-front design with 3/4-inch full-overlay styling. It also lists 1/2-inch cabinet-grade plywood boxes, metal L-bracket reinforcement on base cabinets, 3/4-inch adjustable plywood shelves with metal rests, and natural clear-coated interiors. Drawer hardware is described as full-extension, undermount, soft-close concealed steel glides, while doors are listed with six-way adjustable concealed hinges and soft-close inserts.

These are family-level listing statements rather than universal specifications. Dimensions, construction, shelf count, hardware, finish, included pieces, and compatibility can vary among cabinets, panels, fillers, molding, hoods, and accessories. Review the current documentation for every SKU and resolve any discrepancy before ordering.

Organize the Unassembled Workflow

Onyx Shaker is listed as unassembled, so prepare for receiving, sorting, assembly, and staging before installation begins. Reserve a clean, level work surface with enough room for components, tools, packaging, and completed cabinets. Protect the dark visible surfaces from moisture, dust, adhesive, and rough floors. Keep the approved elevation and cabinet schedule nearby so every carton can be labeled by room and wall.

1. Count packages and compare labels with the order documentation.
2. Inspect cartons and visible parts before discarding packaging.
3. Sort components by cabinet code and read the current instructions for that SKU.
4. Confirm required tools, fasteners, adhesives, and installation hardware.
5. Check each assembled box for square, alignment, and secure connections.
6. Stage completed cabinets in installation sequence without stacking doors carelessly.

Do not assume every Onyx Shaker item uses identical assembly steps or includes the same hardware. Specialty cabinets, drawers, panels, and accessories may require different procedures. If a contractor will assemble the order, confirm the labor, workspace, disposal, and adjustment scope in the estimate.

Delivery Timing and Finish Care

Onyx Shaker is listed as warehoused in Phoenix, Arizona, with an estimated seven-day lead time. Treat that estimate as planning guidance rather than a guaranteed arrival date. Inventory, order size, destination, carrier scheduling, and holidays can change fulfillment. Confirm stock before scheduling demolition, installers, or countertop templates. When cartons arrive, photograph packaging concerns and follow the seller’s reporting window for damage or shortages.

Use a soft microfiber cloth for routine dust and fingerprints. For marks, use a lightly damp cloth and dry the surface promptly. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh solvents, standing water, and steam directed at doors or finished ends. Wipe cooking residue before it builds up, use ventilation, and follow Highland Cabinetry’s current care guidance. Test any unfamiliar cleaner in a discreet location.
